It has come to the Town’s attention that a local business owner received a fraudulent email earlier this week that appeared to come from planning.townofkiowa@usa.com.
After investigation and consultation with our IT Department, it has been determined that this email did not result from unauthorized access to the Town’s computer systems or records. Rather, the sender used publicly available information regarding a current land use application to create a fraudulent invoice (and fraudulent instructions and fraudulent payment instructions) in an attempt to obtain payment from the applicant. Our IT Department is also aware of similar attempts occurring in several other towns at this time.
Please be advised:
- The Town of Kiowa will never send invoices in this format.
- The Town will never request wire transfers or wire payment information.
- All official Town emails will come from an address ending in @townofkiowa.com.
If you receive any communication that appears questionable or unexpected, please get in touch with the Town Office immediately at 303-621-2366 so we can verify its legitimacy.
